Book review — That Hideous Strength: A deeper look at how the West was lost

The cancer of cultural Marxism in the church, the world and the gospel of change

Don’t be put off by the lengthy title or the fact that almost every page has at least one footnote or that nearly 100 other works are cited in the process. This is a seminal book with a foreword by Carl Trueman and very warm commendations from David Wells, Fred Zaspel and David Robertson. It is also eminently readable and accessible to any thinking Christian.

Every generation of evangelical believers needs to emulate the men of Issachar ‘who understood the times and knew what Israel should do’ (1 Chronicles 12:32). At this precise point in our history, I believe this book helps us on both fronts more than any other that is currently available.

The title, borrowed from C. S. Lewis, indicates that the author acknowledges a malign, spiritual strategy lying behind the avalanche of disparate cultural changes which are deliberately aimed at undermining the essentially biblically-derived structures of Western society. For those who are bewildered by what is happening all around us, this book provides clarity. For those who simply intend to plough on regardless, this book is a huge wake-up call.

If I say much more, you may think you don’t need to read it. But you should! And buying a copy for your pastor could reap rich dividends both for him and the witness of your church.
