Commenting on the fact that Jesus washed Judas’ feet when he washed the feet of his disciples, Dr Roseveare says, ‘Jesus service to Judas was just the same as he was rendering to the rest. Some of us have to be seen to be serving before we’ll serve. We need the applause of people, saying how gracious or generous or public-spirited we are, before we’ll act. We want people to know who it was that did the service, even if they did not actually see it being done, so that we do not lose the praise. Jesus worked even when there was no praise.’
