It has been a long time since a Christian book caused me to giggle like this one did! Written to a young adult to share with them aspects of the life and ministry of Lloyd-Jones, this quirky book is full of gems. It is not a hagiography. If you’ve read other biographical works about the Doctor, you’ll still have something new to learn, as did I. Each chapter is short and conversational, with the author, aware of his readership, making sure he explains any terms or relevant context to his subject matter.
The 13 chapters explore different aspects of Lloyd-Jones’ life and ministry, and some are deeply personal. The chapter ‘Self-examiner’ gives us a glimpse of what we would today call a spiritual journal, and we get to see inside the Doctor’s mind and heart. It is fascinatingly honest.
As the book progresses, the reader picks up some bits and bobs of the writer’s life, family and thoughts, which helps the book feel like you are listening in to a good chat. Though written with younger folk in mind, this book is for anyone who is interested in finding out more about the 20th century’s greatest preacher. However, you will need to have some biblical and church literacy to fully benefit. I did wonder how many millennials will pick up this book for themselves. Maybe a grandparent will buy it for them? The content would lend itself to a series of podcasts, and then more millennials will benefit. Now there’s an idea!
