Book review — I’m Praying For You - 40 days of praying the Bible for someone who is suffering

Joni Eareckson Tada, in her commendation of this book, writes, ‘When I lie awake through the night watches, I earnestly pray for friends who are suffering greatly.’ This is exactly what I try and do. But what to pray for? How do I pray with a friend who is going through trauma or suffering? I try to be careful when sharing Bible verses and when praying together as I don’t want my choice of text or words to make matters worse. If you share these concerns, then this book is for you.

Each chapter is about three pages long and comprises of a Bible verse or passage, a short explanation of that scripture, a written prayer based on the Bible passage, and some empty lines for the reader to use to pen their own prayer. At the end of each chapter is a QR code for the reader to send a personal text message to the person being prayed for, and to share with them something about that prayer. The Bible verses are relevant and challenging, they are not platitudes, nor do they use Scripture like an aspirin.

This book is for all, but would be invaluable for pastoral visiting and for hospital chaplains.
