Book review — Heavenly Minded

This is a precious little book packed full of good things. Based on the words of Paul’s second and third chapter to Colossians it is a simple study of what it is to be ‘heavenly minded’. The author asks the questions, ‘Why?’, ‘What?’ and ‘How?’

Here is a quote that illustrates what is meant by heavenly mindedness: ‘Paul stresses the importance of heavenly mindedness and implicitly acknowledges its challenge. What does it mean to look heavenwards? Well, it means to turn to Christ, who is seated in heaven. Turn to the eternal things of God. Turn to the enduring city whose builder and maker is God. Turn to what is good and holy. Turn to the everlasting throne of God.’

Mary Wilson Hannah uses some homely illustrations to help us understand and asks the questions, ‘Are we fit for heaven?’ and ‘Are we looking for Jesus to return?’

She writes, ‘If Christ isn’t the centre of your ambitions for your future in heaven, he won’t be the centre of your ambitions for your life on earth.’

The reader is led finally to the glorious assurance that we are now fit for heaven through what Christ has done for us. When you have finished reading the book (it only takes 50 minutes!) you are asked to do your homework by filling in five questions.
