Heart songs for every saint is a reflection on six psalms – Psalms 10, 51, 88, 91, 121 and 145. The book is pastoral in tone and aimed at the mature Christian. The author is not afraid to expound each psalm with honesty and doesn’t fudge the reality of darkness and suffering in the life of the believer. Heart songs for every saint is honest; it points us to God but not in a trite way.
The chapter on Psalm 88 is masterful. Where are the songs for our misery? Well, this psalm is surely one of them. It is a deeply painful prayer and the author directs us to give words to our sorrow. He writes as if he is talking directly to you, the reader, challenging the cliches often used in times of suffering. He is raw and real in his treatment of suffering. Although the book grapples with deep questions it is not without hope and not without Christ. This book should be a must for use in pastoral care.
