Book review — God And The Transgender Debate

Transgenderism is the hot topic of the day. It’s important that Christians have a clear understanding of the issues involved and that we have thought through the way we are to respond. This book will do just that and I wholeheartedly commend it. There is plenty of wisdom in this carefully researched and well-written book.

One of the most important feature of this book is that the very first chapter is about compassion for people who do struggle with their gender identity, showing the kind of love that Jesus showed to everyone he met whatever their struggles and/or sin. This tone continued throughout the book which is very important. However, that doesn’t rule out the need to speak truth where it is necessary, in fact love requires it.

In the first section, Andrew looks at the cultural issues involved – what transgenderism actually means and how we got to the position we’re in as a society. Following that he does a great job of drawing out the biblical material on what it means to be a human and therefore what we’re to understand about gender. The final section spends a good amount of time grounding that in real life scenarios and how we might apply our thinking. There’s a bonus appendix tackling the tricky but common question of whether we should use the chosen pronouns of transgender people.
