Book review — Big Hearted – Are you giving happily or hesitantly?

This is a book for our day, a day when we are too coy in our culture about talking about money, lest we offend. As a former missionary, the author must know only too well the joys and sorrows of walking by faith in the generosity of others. The book is not a big read, but it is a challenging one although it won’t give you a guilt trip unless that is the Holy Spirit’s intention.

Theologically, the subject is set in the context of God’s overflowing love and generosity. The book is heart-warming as we are reminded of God’s careful and loving dealings with his people through the times of the Old and New Testaments. It is replete with relevant Scripture and biblical examples, as well as examples from church history. The author calls God’s people to a cheerful generosity and he does it by winning us to God’s abundance rather than rebuking us.

‘Our theology drives and informs our generosity. If our view of God is cold, fearful and limiting, then that is what our generosity will be like! If our view of God is as the Father who chose us before the world, who pours His love and mercy through His Son to us, then we too will overflow.’
