Book review — A Wilderness Of Mirrors: Trusting Again In A Cynical World

There has been a lot of much needed talk about power and the misuse of it in the last few years. This book is a very helpful contribution to that conversation. Not really knowing what it was about, I bought it because I was intrigued by the title and knew the author to be a good writer. I’m so glad I did.

Mark Meynell gives a really helpful analysis of the last hundred years and how we’ve got to where we are now. He shows how those events have shaped our present-day culture and led to the suspicion, cynicism and isolation that so many in our society experience. In the second half of the book, he shows us how beautifully the truth about Jesus speaks to our society. As Chris Wright says in his forward to the book, he shows us how the gospel story provides us with ‘a hard-won hope in a “wilderness of mirrors,” a call to trust again, and a motivation for a biblically rooted, authentic, and humbly confident mission by God’s people in God’s world.’

The book is incredibly insightful and very readable. If you want to understand our culture better, know how to engage with many in our society and have your heart warmed by seeing Jesus in a new way, read this book.
