David’s early life was not easy, but the Lord was with him. His father was killed in October 1940 when their house in London was bombed. He heard the gospel when he was evacuated to the home of a Christian couple in Oxfordshire, and later at Spurgeon’s Orphanage. Converted in 1949, David soon felt God’s call to ministry.
David was very gifted intellectually. Following his degree in history at Cambridge, he trained for the ministry at Spurgeon’s College. After three years of ministry in London, at the age of 28, David was appointed as Principal of the Irish Baptist College in Belfast. In 1974 he was called to be co-pastor of Lynnwood Baptist Church, in Pretoria.
In 1978 he returned to the United Kingdom to pastor Mount Zion English Baptist Church, Cardigan. After that he took the post of Theological Books Editor for Inter-Varsity Press and in 1999 became Managing Editor of the EMW’s Bryntirion Press and served on the Advisory Board of the Evangelical Magazine for many years. For several years, David was chair of Caring for Life.
After the death of his first wife, Gwyneth, David married Sue. In recent years David suffered ill health and was wonderfully cared for at home by his wife until he passed peacefully into the presence of his Lord.
